Agia Galini is a popular coastal village located 61km southeast of Rethimnon and 68km southwest of Ηeraklion.
The beaches, the harbor and the picturesque alleys with restaurants and shops attract many tourists every year in Agia Galini. The natural beauty of the scenery, the emerald beaches, the rugged sea caves in the west, the memory of the hippies and the peace of the sea have made this village a popular destination for thousands of visitors.
On the east side of the port starts a long beach which extends to the east to Kokkinos Pirgos. The part of the beach near the port of Agia Galini is very well organized and provides all the necessary facilities to bathers. It consists of small pebbles and cold water because of the fact that river Platis (or Amarianos) empties 200m on the east of the harbor. Additionally, the sea is calm all year round and its temperature is constantly 18 degrees Celsius. This is the reason the village was named like that (Galini means peace).
Ιn the west side of the port stands the rock from which, according to tradition, Daedalus and Icarus flied in order to escape from Minoan Crete. At this point, has been built a monument with two statues to commemorate the two first pilots of the mythology. The rock they used as a base for their flight is still there and looks towards the sea, still like farewell them on their fateful journey.
